The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force has completed a major enhancement to their Tuskegee Airmen exhibit. New to the exhibit is the bronze Tuskegee Airman Bust by Clarence Shivers (1923-2007) who trained as a Tuskegee pilot during World War II and went on to serve as a U.S. Air Force instructor pilot during the Korean War. Shivers remained in the Air Force until his retirement in 1969 at the rank of Lt. Col. The bust is from the life-sized statue completed in 1988 that stands as a memorial to the Tuskegee Airmen at the U.S. Air Force Academy. It is a gift of Carl M. Spaulding and Judy H. Fair-Spaulding, friends of Cla-rence and Peggy Shivers. The U.S. military was racially segregated during World War II, and most black soldiers and sailors were re-stricted to support positions and labor battalions. A U.S. Army Air Forces experiment showed that African-Americans could command, support, and fly in combat units when afforded equal opportunities. The USAAF’s African-American fliers, also known as the ‘Tuskegee Airmen’ served with distinction and directly contributed to the eventual integration of the U.S. Armed Forces.
